Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Dual Diagnosis: Substance Abuse + Mental Disorder
A person who has both an alcohol or drug problem and an emotional/psychiatric problem is said to have a co-occurring disorder, or dual diagnosis. To recover fully, a person with a dual diagnosis needs treatment for both problems.
How Common Is Dual Diagnosis?
More common than you might imagine. According to a report published by the Journal of the American Medical Association :
- 37% of alcohol abusers and 53% of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness.
- Of all people diagnosed as mentally ill, 29% abuse either alcohol or drugs.
Addiction or Disorder-Which Came First?
Very often it is the psychiatric problem that develops first. Persons with emotional symptoms "self-medicate" through the use of drugs or alcohol. Self-medication can lead to physical or psychological dependence. Once physical dependence occurs, there are two issues that must be addressed instead of one.
Bi-polar disorder, manic depression, clinical depression, schizo-affective...these are jst some of the more common types of disorders that make up one-half of a dual diagnosis.
For others, alcohol or drug dependency is their primary condition. A person with a severe substance abuse problem can have symptoms that mirror a psychiatric disorder including:
depression, hallucinations, mania, fits of rage and suicide attempts. Over time, a treatment plan that combines medication counseling and therapy and participation in support groups generally has the greatest chance of success.
